Clevite thrust bearings are made of Copper, lead, tin on a steel back.

• Thrust washers offer better alignment of the bearing surface to the crankshaft surface promoting a wider and more uniform contact because they are independent of the journal bearing.
• Thrust washers limit axial movement and provide a bearing surface. Thrust bearings are designed to support axial load.
• Thrust washers either have multiple tapered ramps and relatively small flat pads or have curved surfaces that follow a sine wave contour around their circumference.
• Tear-drop or through grooves on the flange faces and wedge shaped ramps at each parting line allow engine oil to enter between the shaft and bearing surfaces.
